Understanding Place Value

Understanding Place Value Example

This Year 3 'Understanding Place Value' scheme of work is a great way to familiarise your class with the value of the different digits in a number as well as how the number system works in general. By the end of the week, they will be able to describe what each digit is worth in a number, partition with ease, identify numbers that are larger or smaller than other numbers, and much more.

With detailed lesson plans, engaging slides, differentiated worksheets and other resources, these 'Understanding Place Value' lessons provide all you need to teach this useful scheme of work.

Individual Lessons

Understanding Place Value: Digit Values

Understanding Place Value: Digit Values

Lesson #1
Price: £2.99

This lesson starts by recapping how to partition a two-digit number into tens and ones, before exploring how to partition a three-digit number into hundreds, tens and ones. It then challenges your class to think about the value of each digit in a three-digit number and order numbers from smallest to largest. There is also the opportunity to practise expressing numbers in both numerals and words.

Understanding Place Value: Comparing Numbers

Understanding Place Value: Comparing Numbers

Lesson #2
Price: £2.99

Children will practise ordering numbers with two, three and even four digits in this lesson as they recap the value of each digit in a number. The main activity has a game the children can play to compare two numbers, while the ‘Fancy Something Different?’ activity gets children to generate their own numbers to order into a number chain.

Understanding Place Value: 10 or 100 More or Less

Lesson #3
Price: £2.99

The third lesson in this series teaches your class how to add ten or one hundred more or less to three-digit numbers. Using dienes blocks as a visual representation, the slides give plenty of opportunities to practise this before either completing a series of diagrams to demonstrate their knowledge or answering questions where the numbers are expressed in words to add an extra challenge!

Understanding Place Value: Missing Numbers

Understanding Place Value: Missing Numbers

Lesson #4
Price: £2.99

In this lesson, their children will use their understanding of place value to solve missing number addition problems. The slides guide your class through possible methods of solving such problems before having a go at solving missing number problems for themselves. There is also the opportunity to match numbers represented in numerical, pictorial, word and expanded formats, and adding in the missing representation for each set.

Understanding Place Value: Counting in Multiples

Understanding Place Value: Counting in Multiples

Lesson #5
Price: £2.99

The final lesson in this series encourages children to look at numerical patterns and count in multiples of 4, 8, 50 and 100. The slides use number chains to with missing numbers to generate discussions and get children to work out which numbers are missing based on the information they have. They can then try this for themselves using the differentiated missing number chains, or order sets of number cards. For either activity, children will need to identify the rule in the pattern and ascertain which numbers in the pattern are missing.
